Creators of Halo are working with Call of Duty publisher on Destiny

VIDEO GAME GIANTS Activision and Bungie have taken the wraps off Destiny, their outer space first person shooter.

Separately the firms have honed both the science fiction and modern warfare type games, and together they promise something quite special. Destiny promises to be huge, and first person shooter punters will find themselves in what is called a "shared persistent world" where they can randomly bump into other gamers.

"Destiny is the game that we've been dreaming of building for years. We couldn't be more pleased about our extraordinary collaboration with Activision. We finally have the right partner, team and technology to bring the experience to millions of players worldwide," said Bungie president Harold Ryan.

"Destiny will draw players into a world filled with mystery, action, and adventure, but most importantly, Destiny is more than a disc in a drive, it is a living social universe filled with other players."

Destiny is set in the distant future and players take on the role of a Guardian in the last city left on Earth. It is a story driven space quest exercise that will let people play solo or with their online friends and other gamers.

2012: Global warming became reality

As 2012 began, winter in the U.S. went AWOL. Spring and summer arrived early with wildfires, blistering heat and drought. And fall hit the eastern third of the country with the ferocity of Superstorm Sandy.

This past year’s weather was deadly, costly and record-breaking everywhere – but especially in the United States.

If that sounds familiar, it should. The previous year also was one for the record books.

“We’ve had two years now of some angry events,” said Deke Arndt, U.S. National Climatic Data Center monitoring chief. “I’m hoping that 2013 is really boring.”

Tacita T-Race Electric Motorcycle Gets Tested At Merzouga Rally - Gas 2

With fewer moving parts and less reliance on liquids, electric vehicles have some serious potential as desert rally racers…but few EV makers are ready to test their expensive prototypes in such harsh climates. Well Tacita, an Italian motorcycle maker, has no such reservations. Last month the Tacita T-Race electric motorcycle made its racing debut at the Merzouga Rally in Morracco.

The name is derived from Tacita, the Roman Goddess of Silence, and it is quite appropriate for a quiet electric motorcycle. The Tacita T-Race was developed specifically for off-roading, and the company claims a full-days worth of driving can be had from the four lithium-polymer batteries on board providing 10 kWh of power.

2012 Mazda 3 Long-Term Road Test

A year ago we added the 2012 Mazda 3 i five-door Grand Touring with Skyactiv technology to our long-term test fleet. Quite a mouthful, but it's really not that complicated. In a nutshell, Skyactiv is Mazda's collection of fuel-saving technologies. Some are big, some are small, but they're all geared toward extracting every last mile out of the average tank of gas.

Our 2012 Mazda 3 benefited from the new 155-horsepower Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Also new was the Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. Together, they earn EPA fuel economy ratings of 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. Mazdas were not historically known to be miserly at the pump, so this was newsworthy.

We added one major option to our $22,000 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv, the Technology package. It set us back $1,400 but was worth it, as it added a blind spot monitoring system, satellite radio, alarm, rain-sensing wipers and the trick headlights (xenon, auto-leveling, pivoting and auto on/off). For a few hundred dollars more we got the Skyactiv-specific interior lighting kit and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Total MSRP was $25,520.

The move is the latest, most dramatic step in an escalating standoff that could easily lead to a financial version of Armageddon: the forcible (and unprecedented) delisting of all Chinese shares currently traded on U.S. exchanges, including big-name stocks like Baidu, Sinopec, and China Mobile -- causing losses of billions of dollars and damaging the perception that the United States is friendly to Chinese businesses.

Lacey Maffettone never intended to become a personal style blogger. When she started blogging in May of 2010, she had just moved to Washington and she wanted to share her thoughts on the fashion of the city. Skylanders Giants Has a Little Something Extra on the Wii U

The Wii U version of Skylanders Giants doesn't look noticeably better or worse than the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 version. It plays exactly the same as well—the Skylander toys are placed on the USB-connected portal, they come to life in the game, adventure ensues. For the Wii U version of Skylanders Giants, the Wii U control pad makes all the difference.

For one thing, the game is fully playable via the control pad. Launch it, select the option to play on the controller's screen and the television or monitor goes blank, allowing player to indulge in some rather pretty portable portal mastery as long as they stay within range.

When the control pad is used in conjunction with a monitor, however, it changes the way I play in a small but significant way. While playing on the television the control pad displays the statistics of the Skylander currently in play.

Apple hedge fund Braeburn Capital: $117 billion in AUM

Apple (AAPL) is not only the most profitable company in the world, but it also now owns the world’s largest hedge fund as well. Zero Hedge reports that Braeburn Capital, a Nevada-based asset management corporation that Apple founded specifically to manage its cash, now has more than $117 billion in assets under management, making it even larger than hedge fund giant Bridgewater that currently has around $100 billion in AUM.

As Zero Hedge notes, Apple has been very secretive about Braeburn’s investments and activities and has kept the company’s profile decidedly low since “Apple for now uses Braeburn primarily in its capacity to find legal tax loopholes all around the world and avoid paying taxes.” What’s more, Zero Hedge says that Braeburn exists in a sort of legal black hole where it has no reporting requirements and thus isn’t obligated to disclose to anyone what it owns. The website speculates that Braeburn could soon become much more well-known, however, as the government could soon turn its attention toward closing legal loopholes that have allowed hugely profitable companies to avoid paying taxes.

House Passes Sweeping Anti-Environmental Bill As Final Business Before Elections

House lawmakers skipped out of town on Friday until after the November elections, but not before pushing through a sweeping anti-environmental package that has no chance of becoming law.

Republican leaders teed up the Stop The War On Coal Act, H.R. 3409, as their last vote before lawmakers hit the campaign trail full time. It passed 233 to 175, with 19 Democrats joining nearly all House Republicans in voting for it.

Despite its title, the bill isn't just about the coal industry: it repackages four previously passed House GOP bills, plus adds in another one, aimed at blocking carbon pollution standards. Specifically, the package would eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency's clean car standards, nullify the EPA's mercury and air toxic standards, weaken the Clean Water Act and block efforts to reduce damage from coal mining.

The bill already has a White House veto threat on it, and there's no chance it would move in the Senate, but Republicans went ahead and passed it anyway. They argued that their package would spur job growth -- the number one message for everyone ahead of the elections -- by removing regulations on the coal industry and on energy development in general.

Yes, We Did: Canadian Mining Company Admits to Polluting U.S. River for Over 100 Years

It’s not often that a large company comes clean, so to speak, and admits to having caused pollution. But that’s exactly what Teck Resources Limited, a Canadian metals and mining company based in Vancouver, has just done.

The Company “has admitted that mining waste and effluent from its Trail smelter polluted the Columbia River across the U.S.-Canada border in Washington State,” reports the Edmonton Journal. “Its subsidiary, Teck Metals Ltd., agreed to these facts as part of a civil lawsuit with U.S. plaintiffs.”

They add, “The Teck Metals agreement released Monday acknowledges some portion of the effluent and slag from its Trail operations in southeastern B.C. were transported and present in the Upper Columbia River in the U.S., and that some hazardous substances were released into the environment in the U.S.”

Wind energy could provide 20-100 times current global power demand, according to a study published this week in Nature Climate Change. Other studies have shown similar results, but they do not mean that wind power is all we will ever need, says Ken Caldeira of Stanford University's Carnegie Institution, and co-author of the new study."We're always going to need a variety of energy sources," Caldeira told the Guardian.

Nor does it mean installing enough wind turbines to power the world is practical or even feasible. There are significant technical and resource problems to overcome, not least of which is finding the money to construct millions of turbines, he acknowledged.

"It's a huge scale-up … but not unimaginable. The reality is this is what the global energy generation is right now."

And right now humanity uses about 18 terawatts of power, 87% of which is from coal, oil, and gas. Only about 0.2 terawatts comes from wind. (A terawatt is a trillion watts. A thousand watts or kilowatt is roughly the heat output from the average electric kettle.) Caldeira and colleagues calculated there is a potential of 400 terawatts of wind power at the Earth's surface and 1,800 terawatts of power from the upper atmosphere. The latter would be generated by tethered turbines floating hundreds or thousands of metres in the air where the winds are stronger and more consistent.
